FAQ

How does Pella Roof Coatings compare against the competition?

There are several formulation types within the roof coating market-place.   Pella Roof Coatings are Thermoplastic Rubber (SEBS) coatings, which is intended for the Repair and Restoration of metal roofs, TPO roofs, and EPDM roofs.  Pella Roof Coatings can be used on a variety of buildings, such as, warehouses, factories, storage, grain bins, shipping trailers, and RVs.  Pella Roof Coatings have ultra-low moisture permeability which aids to prevent corrosion and are high in elasticity that allows conformation to roof movement.  Pella Roof Coatings are a two-pass system and can be easily applied with a brush, roller, or sprayer.

Can I use Pella Roof Coatings on my asphalt shingled roof?

We do not recommend that our coating be applied to an asphalt shingled roof, because shingles sometimes move, shift, and curl.  If these types of issues are present, the coating could be punctured and this in turn would allow water to enter.

Can I coat my RV roof with Pella Roof Coatings?

Pella Roof Coatings are an affordable and long-lasting product for protecting your RV roof.  Liquid Rubber Coating!  Available in White or Light Grey.  Pella RV LeakGuard.  A coating of liquid rubber on your RV’s roof can offer substantial long-term protection that may help reduce roof maintenance costs.

How do I prepare a Metal Roof before applying Pella Roof Coating?

All penetrations (A/C, Vents, Pipes, Brackets, etc.) on the roof should be checked and if not working, replaced.  All fasteners should be checked and replaced if faulty.  All roof seams that have a gap more than 1/8” wide should be secured with lap screws.  All rusty areas should be treated with a rust remover or Pella Roof Cleaner detergent.  A garden sprayer works well for this application.  All roofs should be power washed.  Allow roof to DRY COMPLETELY before applying liquid rubber roof coating.

What should I use to prepare Seams and Fasteners?

1 Gallon of Pella Premium Seam Compound (PRC-500) will cover seams and fasteners on approximately 200 sq. ft. or 2 roofing squares.  Seam Compound/Seam Sealer can be brushed on or rolled on.  For gaps greater than 1/8” use polyester mesh to cover gap, followed by coating seam compound over the seam polyester mesh (seam tape) with seam compound (PRC-500).  See application instructions.

What type of power washer should I use to prep/clean my roof?

Gas operated units with a 3000-3500 psi rating are recommended.  Depending on the condition of the roof, 10,000-20,000 sq. ft. can be power washed in a day.  A rotating power blaster tip is highly recommended.

When should I apply the coating?

When applying thermoplastic rubber to roof surfaces (like Metal), do not apply the coating until the ambient air temperature is at least 5 degrees above the dew point to ensure there is not condensation on the roof substrate.

Field coatings can begin 24-48 hrs after seams and fasteners have been prepared with seam compound or when dry to the touch.  Coatings can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed on.  It is best to roll on coating on the outside 12-18 inches of roof, if possible, to avoid over-spray issues.  Wind is a factor to consider when spraying coatings.

Follow application guidelines for reliable results or call Pella Roof Coatings customer service to assist with application questions.  Coating over Aluminum coatings or Asphalt is not recommended.

What type of Spray Equipment should I use?

Most contractors installing thermoplastic rubber of low solids silicone coatings will use airless spray equipment such as the Graco 833 roof rig.

High solids silicone is best applied using a larger Graco 933 roof rig.

It is also feasible to use 3/8” nap rollers to roll on coatings for small to medium sized projects.
